Nancy Faxon (née Plummer) was born in 1914, and raised
in Jackson, Mississippi back in the days when Jackson was one of those small
southern towns where everyone knew everyone else and church was the centerpiece
of life. One of the young Ms. Faxon's girlhood acquaintances was writer, Eudora
Welty, with whom she shared the limelight in local theatre productions. She
was raised as an Episcopalian in the Baptist-dominated South and from early
on, music, especially sacred music, was a large part of her life.
Now in her mid 80's, Ms. Faxon has not lost any of the poise
of her youth. Her sparkling eyes, warm smile and southern eloquence have not
faded, nor has her love for music, despite a significant loss of hearing.
Though she has been writing music for the greater part of the 20th century,
and her liturgical works are well known, and frequently performed, this collection
is her first commercially recorded and produced work.
The Ralph Farris Chorale is composed of people who
love to sing. They consider time spent learning scores and improving musicianship
to be recreational, educational and therapeutic. Ralph Farris believes that
people in general have the ability to make a good choral sound, proving that
the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A collective positive attitude
coupled with a few gifted soloists provides the warm, lush choral texture
evident on this recording.
